An important thought regarding Twitter

I want to make a point right now, not just for myself but for others here as well, that Twitter inherently is not designed for clear, rational thought. It's a site for short little updates. And I think any attempt to persuade people to become less shitty is fruitless because you cannot elaborate thought like a normal human being in tweets, not unless you want to make a 40+ post thread that only the people agreeing with you are going to bother reading.

I'd be a hypocrite if I were to tell people to NOT argue on twitter, it's an obsession I'm still in the process of breaking. All I'm asking is to consider the fact that any attempt to have any sort of serious discussion on this site will inevitably be boiled down to its most surface-level elements, and there's nothing that draws peoples' attention better than shallow insults and bumper sticker slogans.

I think I'm jumping ship to Tumblr, as far as general social media goes (still staying on FLO). I'd rather a site where I can actually word my thoughts like... well, what I'm doing right now, than a site where the very nature of its design is in conflict with critical thinking. You know that "echo chamber" idiots always talk about? I think the closest thing to a real genuine echo chamber that we as a society have is Twitter. It is an echo chamber for everyone. It's horrifying.

Sorry for the text wall. If I didn't get this out I would have gone crazy from the shit on twitter I just saw.
Which, in and of itself, is all the more proof that Twitter is inherently toxic. BECAUSE I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO SAY THIS ON THERE.

Edit: This isn't about """cancel culture""", good lord...

I can easily relate to this. I can have a twitter account without the toxic furries and hiveminds practically blocking anyone they don't agree with. I've literally been attacked for being an atypical person on that website. Not fun, so I ended up moving accounts several times. It's sad really. Seeing Twitter slowly fall in a downwards spiral with "cancel culture" and block lists and maga trolls. This shit just never stops showing up on furry twitter.

Continued: I hate how some people just never let go of things and bring them back just to cause drama. Like, let it go? People who do that absolutely fucking scare the shit out of me because they can bring up something I did that was like last year and a whole bunch of people join their hate wagon. I'm glad this website actually forbids defaming, I just wish others would do the same. It may fall under the category of harassment, but Twitter really doesn't do shit for that unless they feel like it. It just adds on to my depression.

oh how badly do i agree. god
twitter is a hellhole of a website, as much as i love using it to hook up with people in fandoms and look at cool content that comforts me, its just a cesspool of hate. so many individuals have a hard-on for negativity and have pushed others to do
disastrous things because the harassment is just over the top for even the smallest of things

i sincerely dont blame you for how you feel and im glad you're making the move. please take care, im seriously sorry for all the bullcrap you had to see

100% agree.

Between the hate and death threats/bait, it gets....tiring. I know outrage drives traffic, and hot takes and clout in between actual issues keeps that fire going, but... I shouldn't have to want to create an alt that's completely disconnected with me just to voice my opinion. And that's on TOP of being expected to know all discourse at all times.

And good GOD am I tired of reporting people for making death threats or telling someone to "commit toaster bath" (I ACTUALLY saw this yesterday) because they don't like someone. I think Twitter's just ignoring my reports at this rate because I don't get a "hey, your report got this person suspended" message anymore lmao. I get it, someone can truly be so gross that you hate them that much, but at some point some kid's gonna get more than just a suspension on Twitter for it.

This scares me! I get it, we're all at home and some of us ain't got anything better to do, but like.... some people are super-spreaders of that sort of thing (and why my blocklist looks rather chaotic). Like, everyone's done something they aren't proud of, and most people learn, grow, and move on from it. I know I have! But when people bring up old crap and get that clout fire going again, it's like... why should people improve at all?

TL;DR I agree, only reason why I even USE Twitter is because everyone else is on it. I've been thinking about overhauling my Tumblr and posting there again.

not only twitter; facebook, instagram whatever, all the generic social media nowadays, even youtube, are being places where people without arguments want to base themselves on weak words, where none of these sites were made for this.
none of these sites were even originated with the intention of creating very serious discussions. twitter is worse because it is limited to 240 characters, facebook is a pool of meme and fakenews, ditto with instagram. youtube became a pool of shallow and equal videos ... and so on. after years i also decided to try to go back to tumblr also, but as a blog.

Twitter is the reason I am so unstable and at unease with posting or laughing at any dark or crude humor. It's like that feeling you're going to get bashed no matter what you say.

haha double clicked by mistake. But I entirely agree. People on twitter terrify me because it always seems to have something toxic going on everywhere I look... it's very strange

This post very much is on point. I was always wary to use Twitter as a primary social platform due to the sheer amount of negativity that gravitates and obits in many fandoms and generally speaking, communities.

It’s not a good place for “court of discussion“ remotely. One of the worst things one can do in the heat of an argument is act out impulsively and be rash about responses Unfortunately, Twitter as a platform facilitates that as a mode of communication due to its focus on burst content and quips.

I couldn't agree more with you. I recently left Twitter permanently because of all of the drama. While it was the place where i had my first true interactions with the furry fandom, I slowly realized the mistake I made by signing up to the site. It took a bit of a toll on my mental health with all of the drama and fighting and retardation.

Beta sites even as pixilart have problems like this- everyone hates furries, art theft is a big problem, and don't get me started on homophobes, transphobes, ect.
