Minor rant+ PSA, but I hate how people claiming to be wolf advocates are against any and all pet wolves just because they started wild (or are all still wild according to WSWS) A supporter of theirs even admit to trying to make her best friend abandon her wolf! I mean, how do you think dogs came to be? They're domesticated wolves! Going off of that logic, dogs are not pets because they're a subspecies of wolf and we should steal all dogs from loving homes, dump them back into the wild with ill-developed survival skills and leave them for dead just because of where they came from. Actual wolf advocates would educate on the subject and give recommendations on whether or not they think you should have a wolf, not lambast all who have exotic pets. And of course, there's those few anti-wolves who claim that all wolves are inherently dangerous as if humans can't be just as dangerous.
But the point is, not everyone who has a pet wolf just stole them from the wild and locked them up in their homes. That's what someone who is cruel would do, like most circuses. There are indigenous communities with humane breeders who regularly have domesticated wolves because it's their culture and they passed it on to other cultures. Dogs were tamed by feeding them and offering them love and a shelter. The very first dog breed of all time was a wolf. Outdated arguments like these are honestly why I lost faith in groups like Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary who have even openly admitted to stealing pets from loving homes out of the assumption that they were just ripped out of the wild and honestly why I no longer support them. I wonder if they're against pet cats too just because they also descended from a wild animal?
Here's what I think. If any of you are planning to have a pet wolf, just make sure you're in a state or province where it's legal to do so and ALWAYS take responsibility for your wolf; at the very least make sure they have plenty of roaming space, preferably forested areas, take them out often, especially be sure you're financially capable of taking care of them such as feeding them and making sure they have some place to go to the bathroom, give them lots of love and attention, and while I don't think spaying or neutering of wolves is legal anywhere, I would recommend humane alternatives instead, such as prescription sterilization medicine which is always temporary or reversible, and NO MILLS! Please, dear God. Those places are definitely cruel and do ALL animals a MAJOR disservice as they are known to force incestuous breeding and killings.
