One could make the same argument with regards to conservativism. It wouldn't surprise me if that particular axis pertains to the desire for change vs the desire for things to remain the same within what we consider modernity, and to what degree.Progressive in relation to what? What historical point is it anchored to?
I vaguely recall from elsewhere that this axis actually extends from reactionary to radical - reactionaries wanting a throwback state, conservatives wanting the status quo, progressives wanting gradual change, and radicals wanting immediate and, well, radical change.
